Grant Retires After 47 Years of Service

Long-time Mobile Housing Board employee Wayman R.F. Grant, Jr. retired from Mobile Housing Board, effective August 18, 2017, after working for the public housing authority for 47 years.

Grant retired as Tenant & Community Services Officer of MHB, a position he held since 1990. He joined the agency in 1969, initially as Coordinator of Youth Sports Activities and later that year as a social worker. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Tuskegee Institute after graduating from Central High School in Mobile.

Grant also served MHB as a Housing Manager during his tenure with the agency, achieving the rank of Housing Manager III. He served as Housing Manager of Gulf Village Homes in Prichard and Josephine Allen Homes in the Happy Hill Community.

As Tenant & Community Services Officer, he managed MHB’s Community Services Department, which provides enrichment, recreational and lifestyle activities for children and adults who reside in MHB’s affordable housing communities. He worked closely with the Resident Associations in these communities and the jurisdiction-wide Residents Council.

Mr. Grant also worked closely with organizations that provide programs and activities for families, including Boys & Girls Clubs of South Alabama and Senior Citizens Services, doing business as Via Health & Fitness Center.

Mr. Grant was instrumental in starting the Summer Work Employment Experience Training Program called SWEET-P, the BayBears Rookie League, Marching Gators Youth Band, Voter Empowerment Program, Volunteer Awards Program for residents, Public Housing Drug Prevention, Interdiction and Elimination Program, and other key programs and initiatives.

He was named MHB Employee of the Year in 2008 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to families and to the agency.
